hybridization

Postby Guzman_1J » Sun Dec 01, 2019 7:16 pm

So is hybridization the overlap of orbitals between two elements and it's also possible for only a single element(the example in class about CH4, C had sp3 hybridization)? How exactly does hybridization work? Where they overlap its like they become one orbital and share the number of electrons between the two orbitals? I'm not sure exactly if that makes sense to me or if I'm right about what hybridization is, can someone please explain?

Hybridization is when 2 orbitals blend together. This is why carbon is capable of having 4 electron bonding spots despite only having 2 electrons in the p orbital. When the s and p orbital combine it forms 4 electron pair spots.

Hybridization is when orbitals fuse together forming a new orbital- with new properties that influence shape etc. This allows for bonding, and is more energetically favorable.
