Energy levels in naming hybridizations

Postby Tai Metzger 3K » Mon Dec 02, 2019 11:44 pm

When writing the hybridization of a molecule, for example 2sp, is the 2 indicating the energy level of the orbitals that are being hybridized? Additionally, is it always necessary to include this number or is it acceptable to simply write sp? Thanks!

I think it’s okay to leave out the 2 because in all the homework problems, the solutions were always written without the energy level

I think the 2 is just indicating the energy level of the hybridized orbitals.
