N-triple bond-N pi bond hybridization

Postby nshahwan 1L » Fri Dec 06, 2019 1:16 pm

so for :N=N: the sigma bond would be (N2sp;N2sp) but for the pi bonds, would both of them be (N2p2;N2p2) or would it be (N2p;N2p) for both of them??

(N2p, N2p) because pi bonds happen when p orbitals overlap.

does this mean that pi bonds can only be formed in p orbitals only?

Yeah i'm pretty sure by definition pi bonds form between the overlapping of p orbitals. There could be exceptions I don't know of but when you look it up it says overlapping of pi bonds.
