Lone pairs

Do lone pairs count when figuring out hybridization or not?

Yes, they do because they're also electron groups.

Lone pairs do count. If you think about how we define hybridization, it is through the electron geometry found in the VSEPR Theory. In order to find this electron geometry, we must count both the number of bonds and the number of lone pair sites in order to find the total number of areas of electron density. This then guides the electron geometry and what hybridization occurs.

They do count as 1 region of electron density around the atom.
