Question 2F.3

Postby Diana A 2L » Sat Dec 07, 2019 1:11 pm

In this question, it asked to state how many Sigma and Pi bonds are in SO2. The best Lewis structure with the most balanced formal charges has 2 sigma and 2 pi bonds, but there is also a less dominant resonant structure that has 2 sigma and 1 pi bond. In this case, which would be the correct answer? would both answers be acceptable, or do we just state the bonds of the most dominant Lewis structure?

The more stable structure would be preferred. So, it's the one where S has two double bonds each connected to an O and a lone pair on top of S as well. Count the sigma and pi bonds for that structure.
