Hybrid Orbitals

For the example using ethene, Prof Lavelle said that the pairing energy in a sp2 orbital was higher than the energy required to fix an electron in the p orbital. Is this always the case (can we always assume the fourth electron will enter the unhybridized orbital rather than pairing within a hybrid orbital)?

I believe so! This also occurs in his example of benzene with its sp2 hybridization. The fourth electron would then probably create a pi bond in the double and triple bonds.
Another way to check is to count how many regions of electron density are in the VSEPR structure, and determine its hybridization from there. Going back to Ethene, C has three regions of electron density, so its hybrid orbitals are sp2.
