Hybridization with coefficients
What does it mean when a hybridization is something like 2sp3? Someone told me it meant a higher n state but I don't know to figure that out when looking at the lewis structure of a compound. If anyone understands that and could explain, I would be grateful : )

Look for the electronic geometry of a molecule which is basically counting how many areas of electron density. This number will tell you directly how many hybridized orbitals it is using. So 2 regions will use sp hybridized, 3 will use sp2, ..., 6 will use sp3d2.

The coefficient represents the energy level of the hybridized orbitals. Basically, it's the energy level of its valence electrons. For example, Carbon with four regions of electron density would be 2sp3, which is a hybridization of its valence orbitals on the second energy level: 2s and 2p.

I believe that the coefficients relate to how many regions of electron density the atom has.
