Pi Bonds

Postby Andrew Nguyen 2K » Mon Nov 15, 2021 12:31 am

I was curious is it every possible to have just a pi bond? Or must there always be a sigma bond?

I think so, but I'm not sure. wikipedia says yes, but based on what we learned in class I don't really know

Hey Andrew! I believe--at least in the scope of our class--that a pi bond is only possible with a sigma bond, as a single bond (or one of the bonds in a double or triple bond) is a sigma bond, and anything that follows that first bond would be a pi bond.

For our understanding in this class, a pi bond can only exist when there is a sigma bond present as well.

Hi! I think a pi bond only exists when there is also an existing sigma bond. For example, a double bond contains a sigma bond and a pi bond, and a triple bond contains a sigma bond and two pi bonds. Hope this helps!

Hi Andrew! I believe it is possible for there to be a pi bond and no sigma bond, but it is not often and only in special cases.

There will never be a situation where you have a pi bond without a sigma bond. Sigma bonds are always present when a pi bond is present.

Single bonds - one sigma bond
Double bonds- one sigma bond and one pi bond
Triple bonds- one sigma bond and two pi bonds

Because sigma bonds are first and are present in single, double, AND triple bonds, you will always have a sigma bond. I don't think it's possible to ever just have a pi bond since a pi bond are only double and triple bonds and those are still sigma bonds as well.

From what we have learned so far, it is not possible to have a pi bond without a sigma bond. While it is probably achievable through some sort of experimentation, we have not learned about naturally occurring isolated pi bonds.

Hi! I'm not so Sur about always but for our class there must always be a sigma bond. Think of it like this, there is a single, double, and triple bond, but the first bond you draw would be always be a sigma and the rest would be pi bonds. Hope that helps!

From what we have gone over in class only a sigma bond can exist alone, if there is a pi bond there must be a sigma bond.

For this class, Pi bonds have to exist with one sigma bond, however, I believe it is possible.

From what we've learned in class I think the bonds we are going to work with will always have at least a sigma bond. It's possible that there is an exception out there but I think we should just assume that it will form a sigma bond before a pi bond in our class. Hope that helps!

Single double bonds and triple bonds from what we learn in class have pi bonds but single bonds don't, and sigma bonds are present in all three, I don't think that it is possible to have just a pi bond.
