Re: Textbook Problem 2F 17
Oxygen has three domains: one double bond and two lone pairs. One sp2 orbital for sigma bond, two for each lone pair, and one p orbital for pi bond.

The O in H2CO has a double bond (one domain) and 2 lone pairs (2 domains). This means that the hybridization is sp2 (3 domains).

Hi! sp2 means there are three regions of electron domains, which correlates with trigonal planar. Oxygen has one bond and two lone pairs, so it is sp2 hybridized.
