Book Problem 2F.1

Postby 505739628 » Mon Nov 29, 2021 11:32 pm

State the relative orientations of each of the following hybrid orbitals: (a) sp3 (b) sp (c) sp3d2 (d) sp2

I just didn't even know how to go about solving this problem and was confused because in the answer key all the orientations are the same? Or was the problem only asking us to find the angles between the different orbitals? I was just very confused if anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

It's asking for the VSEPR shape and bond angle(s) that correspond to that shape. The answers shouldn't be all the same - a) is tetrahedron (109.5), b) is linear (180), c) is octahedron (90 and 180), and d) is trigonal planar (120). I don't know if you have to include bond angles, but I did

Based on the information they give you, all you CAN figure out is the electron geometry. It's just the number of electron regions since you have no clue how many of them are bonded and how many are lone pairs. I looked at the answer key and the answers weren't all the same- it was looking for electron geometry and angles.
