sp^3 vs 2sp^3
What is the difference between saying sp^3 vs 2sp^3. Could it also be a different number in front of the sp^3 and other hybridizations, and if so what does that mean?

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
By adding the 2 coefficient in front just clarifies what period the hybridization is taking place. Essentially they mean the same thing.

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
Is the coefficient referring to the period in which it is occurring always necessary, or is it just for additional information?

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
Having the 2 is just for clarity. I'd include it for my own benefit! Hope this helps.

I think the 2 refers to the principle energy level of carbon being 2. Similarly, you often see 'H1s' which refers to the hydrogen's principle energy level of 1.

You could have a different number in front of the hybridization, but since we're really only dealing with group 2 most of the time, you don't really need to add it in front. It's just more for specificity.

Hi!
I believe the 2 coefficient in front refers to the period in which hybridization is taking place, so they mean the same thing. The 2 might just be extra clarification.

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
2sp3 and sp3 are basically the same thing, but 2sp3 is just a more specific way of saying that sp3 hybridization occurs in the second period.

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
The 2 coefficient just specifies what period the sp^3 hybridization is in, which in this case is the 2nd period.

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
In a multiple-choice question, do you think it would be expressed as sp^3 or 2sp^3?

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
The coefficient 2 in 2sp^3 refers to the hybridization occurring in the second period and also that the orbitals involved are the 2s and 2p orbitals.

Thank you for this answer. It really helped!

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
The coefficient just marks that the hybridized orbitals are in between the 2s and 2p unhybridized orbitals.

They are the same thing except the 2 coefficient tells us that it’s happening at a different period
Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
They are the same but in different periods as the 2 shows that it is occurring in the second period.

Re: sp^3 vs 2sp^3
Number 2 simply refers to the period of the element in which the hybridization takes place. It is a useful notation to know, but I would stick to whichever way a specific exercise is asking you to write things down.
