Paramagnetism

Postby Reva Patel 2F » Sun Dec 03, 2023 7:05 pm

Could someone explain the concept of paramagnetism? I'm a bit unsure of the overall difference between paramagnetism and diamagnetism, so if anyone has a simple explanation that would be great!

Hello,

Paramagnetism refers to a type of magnetic behavior exhibited by certain materials which are weakly attracted to an externally applied magnetic field. These materials, such as aluminum and oxygen, have unpaired electrons that align with the magnetic field, causing this attraction. In contrast, diamagnetism is found in materials like copper and bismuth, which are weakly repelled by a magnetic field, due to their electrons pairing up and creating a small magnetic field in the opposite direction.
