Resonance structures stabilize molecules by spreading electron density across multiple arrangements, minimizing energy by delocalizing electrons over various bonds or locations.

Resonance structures show the different forms in which the molecule can distribute their electrons and the way in which that affects the formal charges. Usually the resonance structure with the overall lowest formal charges on the atoms is the most stable, but in actuality the resonance structures show us that the electron placement is more of a hybrid of all the resonance structures, with delocalized electrons that contribute to all the possible resonance structures, rather than just preferring one over the others.

Resonance structures contribute to molecules' stability by allowing electron density distribution over multiple atoms or bonds. This delocalization of electrons:
Lower Energy: Resonance stabilizes the molecule by spreading the electron density, which lowers the overall energy of the molecule.
Increases Stability: Molecules with resonance are generally more stable than those without, as electron delocalization reduces electron-electron repulsion and potential reactive sites.
Affects Bond Lengths and Strengths: In resonance, bond lengths and strengths are often intermediate between the types represented in the different resonance structures, leading to more uniformity in the molecule.
