pi bonds

Postby andrea guzman 1F » Mon Dec 04, 2023 11:51 pm

If two atoms in a pi bond rotate then the pi bond breaks, what could cause the pi bond to break?

If you rotate the atoms by themselves (one atom without the other), you will instantly break the pi bond, as the orbitals are no longer overlapping.

A pi bond will break when the atoms involved in the bond rotate. This is primarily because when the atoms rotate, the orbitals that make up the bond are no longer overlapping.

A pi bond results during a double bond. pi bonds do not allow free rotation around a bond axis, so all atoms are in one plane. Sigma bonds on the other hand have symmetry around the axis, so they are able to rotate freely.
