Bond order of NO

Postby Yinhan_Liu_1D » Sun Oct 30, 2016 11:24 pm

By calculation it is 2.5.

But what does this mean?

Does it mean that there's only 2 bonds? or...

I would appreciate your help.

It means the molecular orbitals that make up the NO bond are somewhere between a double bond and triple bond. This can't be expressed in a Lewis structure, but MO theory predicts this outcome which is closer to the experimentally observable qualities of the NO bond.
