Paramagnetic vs Diamagnetic

Postby Salma Sudarmadji 2I » Fri Nov 04, 2016 5:07 pm

Is the only way to figure out if a material is paramagnetic or diamagnetic is to draw out the molecular orbital energy diagrams?

Thanks

To find out if a material is paramagnetic or diamagnetic, you need to know whether it has unpaired electrons. So yes, you would have to use the molecular orbital energy diagram to find out whether it has unpaired electrons or not. If it does have unpaired electrons, then it is diamagnetic and if it has unpaired electrons, it is paramagnetic.

If you only need to determine if the material is paramagnetic or diamagnetic then it would save you time on a test to only draw out the middle part of the MO diagram.
