Questions 4.77

Postby Madeline_Foo_3J » Sun Nov 06, 2016 2:46 pm

A) draw the bonding and antibonding orbitals that correspond to the sig-bond in H2
B) repeat for HF
C) how do the orbitals differ?

The manual kind of just confused me...

c.) they differ because in HF the Fluorine uses its 2p orbital to construct the orbitals while in the H2 molecule the two hydrogens use their 1s orbital

I also did not understand this question, and would love a full explanation. Why are hydrogen's 1s electrons higher in energy than Fluorine's 2p (something that isn't the case in any of the other diagrams)? Which orbitals are bonding and which are non-bonding? And how does this all match up with the Lewis diagram description of a single bond between H and F?
