M.O. Diagram Textbook Problem 4.57

Postby Colette Ussery 3L » Fri Nov 11, 2016 4:04 pm

Question 4.57 in the textbook asks us to draw the M.O. energy level diagram for N2 and label the energy levels according to the type of orbitals from which they are made. I usually include labels in my M.O. diagrams anyways, but in the answers it shows the M.O. diagram with dotted lines and the labels placed outside of the dotted lines, which is different from how I do it. So my question is how do I answer questions involving M.O. diagrams on the quiz/final?

I think you should just make sure you can clearly tell what you are labeling and that the dotted lines clearly show differences in energy levels. My TA has been drawing them like how it is in the solutions guide however she puts the labels inside the dotted lines next to the lines. Just make sure if one energy level is lower than another, you draw it so it is visibly lower and not ambiguous but just to make sure I suggest asking your TA!
