Sigma & Pi Bonds

Postby giareyes_2B » Sun Nov 13, 2016 10:24 pm

Can someone please explain the reasoning behind why sigma bonds have a lower energy than pi bonds?

In the case of sigma bonds, there is a strong overlap between the regions of electron density, whereas with pi bonds, the overlapping p orbitals do not overlap as much, causing a weaker bond to form.
