Drawing Molecular Orbital Diagrams

Postby Michelle_Li_1H » Tue Nov 29, 2016 4:23 pm

Hi,

When drawing molecular orbital diagrams, I was wondering when and why the molecular orbital would be below the atomic orbital? Thanks!

I think the question you were curious about deals with the orbitals being slightly lower for one element than the other on a molecular orbital diagram. The electrons will be placed lower on if the element has a lower atomic number. For example, on Quiz #3, the Carbon orbitals should have been placed slightly higher than the Nitrogen orbitals because the atomic number of Carbon is less than that of Nitrogen.
