Atomic Orbital Phase

What does it mean for two orbitals to be in or out of phase? I know this results in bonding and antibonding but why?

The electron is being modeled as a wave (wave function) and two interacting waves (wave functions) can be in-phase (add the wave functions) or out-of-phase (subtract the wave functions). See lectures notes on this which I discussed in detail when we started molecular orbital theory.
