Mixing Orbitals

Postby sid bauer » Tue Jul 18, 2017 11:19 pm

When mixing orbitals with one another, do you always need similar energies as well as similar symmetry between bonds? If not, what would happen? would they simply not bond?

Thanks!

If the energies are very different then essentially one has charge transfer (and an ionic bond).
Molecular orbital theory applies to covalent bonds (not ionic bonds).
