Do sigma bonds simply that there is a sharing of two electrons between one elect to another? If so, can we also say that pi bonds are the double bonds? I'm a little bit confused on how these bonds can correlate to the material we have previously learned.
Sigma bonds are the first covalent bonds that atoms can make. Since it is a covalent bond, the electrons are shared. If two atoms have a single covalent bond, it's a sigma bond. When they have double bonds, there is a sigma and a pi bond, and both types of bonds share electrons between the atoms.
Sigma bonds are the single bonds shared between two atoms. Pi bonds are the additional bond in double bonds. A double bond has 1 sigma and 1 pi bond. The distinction is how the orbitals are oriented in relation to another.
The key distinction between a sigma and a pi bond is that a sigma bond is formed by an end-by-end overlap while a pi bond is formed by a side-by-side overlap. Sigma bond is always the first bond formed between 2 atoms. All single covalent bonds are sigma bonds.
