Bond Order

Okay so when BO=3, it means there's a triple bond.
But if BO=1.5, what kind of bond is that?

The .5 in bond order indicates resonance. 1.5 bond order is going to be the average of single and double bonds in a resonance hybrid

Yep so for example if the molecule has 2 single bonds and a double bond in resonance, then the bond order would be (1+1+2)/(3 total regions)= 1.33

A BO=1.5 means that the compound has resonance structures. Therefore, all the bonds have the characteristics of both single and double bonds.

whenever there is a decimal, there is a resonance structure meaning that the bond strength is between either a single bond and a double bond, or a double bond and a triple bond

For the Chapter 4 test, do we have to know what type of molecular orbital an unpaired electron would occupy? Or anything about bond order in general?
