A homonuclear diatomic molecule is a 2 atom molecule made up of the same element. A heteronuclear diatomic molecule is a molecule composed of two atoms of two different elements.

Example of a heteronuclear diatomic molecule: HF
Example of a homonuclear diatomic molecule: O2

Heteronuclear diatomic molecules are composed of two atoms of different elements, like in the case of hydrochloric acid and carbon monoxide.
