Test 4

Is this topic supposed to be in test 4? I do not remember ever talking about it in class but I have heard from other students that we are required to know this.

The syllabus states that we only have to read 11.1 to 11.7. I don't think we will be tested on this topic because diamagnetism and paramagnetism falls under 11.8.

How can we determine if there is a dipole moment? For example, for NO2 on Test 4 the correct answer was yes there is a dipole moment, but do we determine that by looking at the lewis structure?

As discussed in class, need to know the shape to know if the dipole moments (vectors) cancel making the molecule nonpolar, or if the dipole moments (vectors) do not cancel making the molecule polar (with a net dipole moment).

Make sure to stop by Workshops, Step-Up Sessions, Drop-In Hours, Office Hours, and Review Sessions to figure out shape.
