Molecular orbital energy-level diagram

How do you write the configuration of the ground state of the cyanide ion, CN ,
assuming that its is the same as that for CO?

I would assume the carbon and nitrogen share a triple bond, just like carbon monoxide. While nitrogen's octet is now full, but the carbon's octet is not, you add the extra electron (given by the negatively charged ion) to fill that one lone pair on carbon. This would give carbon a formal charge of -1 and nitrogen a formal charge of 0.
