A chemical bond is a bond between two atoms. In a bond, it requires two atoms, specifically the two atoms' orbitals which contain the bonding electrons. So bonding occurs due to orbital overlap. Mathematically we can describe the bonding orbitals as linear combination of the atomic orbitals that are involved in bonding. We learned that orbitals (which are from wavefunctions) can have phase, so if the two orbitals overlap "in phase" we tend to call them bonding orbitals. If the two orbital overlap are "out of phase", the overlap is not favorable as the "in phase" one and we say "anti-bonding orbital" is formed.
