4.79 (diamagnetism)

4.79 asks, "(a) Order the following molecules according to increasing C-F bond length: CF+, CF, CF- . (b) Which of these molecules will be diamagnetic, if any? Explain your reasoning."

What does diamagnetic even mean? Does it have something to do with radicals?
My approach to this problem was simply to draw the lewis structures of each. I ranked them CF+, CF-, CF in order of increasing bond length because of the amount of bonds each molecule has. However, the solutions manual takes on an entirely different approach. How should one go about solving this problem?

Paramagnetism and Diamagnetism are concepts involving molecular orbital theory. This is no longer being covered in Chem 14A so you will not need to know that.
