test #3
according to the website, it says all of molecular shape and bonding will be on test #3 but we haven't covered bond order, diamagnetism, or paramagnetism. so will these subjects be on test #3 or not ?

If we havent covered it in lecture, it should not be on the test. Test 3 will cover the material we learned from after the midterm to the lecture last Monday (11/18).

In one of the other posts Dr. Lavelle said that bond order questions are "fair game." I'm not sure if the same applies to diamagnetism or paramagnetism.

Yes, he mentioned that you must memorize the VSEPR shapes and their bond angles.

Paramagnetic means that there is only one electron in the subshell, whereas diamagnetic means that two electrons are paired (with opposite spin) in the same subshell.

Yes, you should memorize them. However, you should also probably know the reason behind the bond angles.

Like the other posters said, Dr. Lavelle said to memorize basic VSEPR model bond angles and the general reasons behind them. But in addition he said to understand conceptually the bond angles for molecules with lone pairs on the central atom.

We should understand the reason for bond angles for each VSPER shape and eventually memorize the angles.

Dimagnetic elements have no unpaired electrons, while paramagnetic elements have at least 1.

He has posted the sections from the textbook that we should read. I would use this as a guideline for what you should know for the test.

Paramagnetic means that there is one electron in the subshell, and diamagnetic means that there are two paired electrons with opposite spin in the same subshell.

You should know the bond angles. Also, it helps to follow the outlines he posted as to what is on the test.
