Sigma bonds are always single bonds, or the first bond formed. In bonding pairs that share only a single bond, it will always be a sigma bond. However, if there is a double bond, there will be one sigma bond and one pi bond. Similarly, if there is a triple bond, there will be one sigma bond and two pi bonds.
