Essentially, if there are unpaired electrons, it is considered a paramagnetic molecule; if there are no unpaired electrons, it is considered diamagnetic. These terms refer to how these molecules react under a magnetic field. Diamagnetism indicates that all electrons are paired; such molecules tend to be repelled from a magnetic field. Paramagnetism refers to molecules that possess unpaired electrons; such species tend to move toward a magnetic field.
