Sigma and Pi Bonds

Postby 205389184 » Sun Nov 17, 2019 10:35 pm

In a triple bond, does it matter the order in which the sigma and pi bonds are?

For a triple bond, I think of it as 1 sigma bond and then 2 pi bonds

As long as you state there is one sigma and 2 pi bonds it doesn't matter how you assign them.

It seems like all we need to know for sigma/pi bonds for Test 2 is the definition and properties of sigma/pi bonds and what one/two/three bonds mean, is that right?
Thanks!

Yes we need the definition and how they are present in the bonds. In the triple bond, there would be 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds most of the time.

The order of which of the 3 bonds is sigma and which are pi isn't important, even the book doesn't spend very much time on that. I think we probably just have to know that a triple bond has 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds

You don't need to order the bonds. Just know how many sigma and pi bonds are present in each kind of bond (Triple Bond = 1 Sigma Bond and 2 Pi Bonds, etc.)

You just need to know that triple bonds consist of one sigma bond and two pi bonds

All bonds are denoted as straight lines, so there is no way to differentiate them

a triple bond is composed of a sigma bond and two pi bonds. The order does not matter.

You only need to know that a triple bond contains 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds.

Order is not important, just know a triple bond means a sigma bond with two pi bonds

The triple bond will just contain 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds, I think that's all the detail we need to know.

Delocalized pi bonding is seen in resonance structure with varying locations of double and triple bond.

I think you just need to know that there is a sigma bond and two pi bonds in a triple bond, but I think it is most common to say sigma bond first before pi bonds.

Hope it helps!

One sigma and two pi bonds make up a triple bond, and there is no particular order or anything for them.

I don't believe there is a specific order in which these bonds need to be numbered, however one must be sigma and any remaining must be pi bonds.

the order does not matter as long as you know how many sigma and pi bonds there are

Based on the outline, I don't think we'll be asked this on the test.

I don't think the order matters as long as you identify them correctly.

A triple bond has 1 sigma bond and 2 pi bonds but otherwise the order does not matter.

I don't think the order would matter, but I think of it as first a sigma bond and then a pi bond, as single bonds are sigma bonds.

The first bond in a triple bond is a sigma bond, however, the 2 others are necessarily Pi bonds!
