Ligands

What's the difference (molecular) between ligands that only form one bond and those that form more than one bond?

A unidentate or monodentate ligand has only one pair of electrons that it can use to bind to the metal. A bidentate ligand has two lone pairs, both of which can bind to the central metal atom.

Are ligands specific to transition metals/metals or can they be applied to all elements?

I believe ligands are only specific to metals because when I looked it up, the definition of a ligand is an ion/molecule that binds to a central metal atom to form a coordination complex.

My understanding is the that the term "ligand" refer to any species that is bound to a metal by a coordinate bond. Because of this, I think it's fair to use the term ligand with an element bound to the transition metal but not to the metal itself.
