H-F Diagram

Postby Richmund Tan 1L » Sat Oct 31, 2015 6:51 pm

Hi guys,

While I was practicing MO diagrams, I came across Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) and I was wondering what the proper MO diagram would be since H only has 1 electron in the 1s orbital. If anyone knows the proper MO diagram, it would be very helpful. Thank you!

In the review session on Friday, a few students asked about heteronuclear diatomic molecules with atoms in different periods (such as HF). Professor Lavelle said that although the book asks for it, we haven't learned it and he preferred not to cover it... So I wouldn't worry too much as I don't think you'll be expected to know how to do these types of the problems on the test!

I thought that we had to know how to do them, weren't heteronuclear MO diagrams covered in Friday's lecture? I'm pretty sure that they aren't too much different from homonuclear diatomic molecules though, just that the atomic orbitals of the atom with a higher electronegativity needs to be drawn visibly lower in the diagram than the other atom's.

Thanks Jonathan! This is very helpful!
Do you have a strong background in chemistry because this is excellent!
