Magnetism and Stability

Postby Samantha Rundle 3K » Sun Nov 01, 2015 9:28 am

If a diamagnetic molecule's highest occupied molecular orbital is anti-bonding, its bond order would be less. Does this mean that there is no relation between magnetism and stability?

There isn't any direct relationship between magnetism and stability. Magnetism has to do with whether there are unpaired electrons. Stability has to do with the number of bonding vs anti bonding electrons.
