Valence e- Configuration

If you are trying to model the electron configuration of O2 or F2 for example, is drawing a MO energy diagram every time the most efficient way to do so?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but yes, whenever you want to find the electronic configuration of a diatomic molecule you should draw out the MO diagram. I find, however, that drawing only the middle portion of the diagram (the combined orbitals) is often sufficient to answer questions about bond order and paramagnetism/diamagnetism (assuming no differences in electronegativity). If we get a question explicitly asking for us to draw a MO diagram, though, I assume we have to draw everything (the three columns).
