Molecular Orbital Theory

So for a homonuclear diatomics for an element with an atomic number greater than 7, why is the order of the pi bonding orbital and sigma bonding orbital switched in the 2p orbital?

When Z>8, the sigma bonding orbital is lower in energy than the two pi bonding orbitals because the sigma bonding orbital is lower in energy than the pi bonding orbitals. However, when Z<8, the pi bonding orbitals are lower in energy than the sigma bonding orbital and that is why the sigma bonding orbital is written first.
