Names of ligands

Postby Brandon Pham 1F » Tue Nov 28, 2023 11:32 am

I was just lookin at the chart of ligand names and was wondering if we were expected to know these names off the top of our heads or will a list be provided if we are required to name a complex compound.

Need to know ligand names and charges. I made a one-page list at: ... pounds.pdf

The textbook lists more ligands, but we'll limit it to the one-page table I made to assist students.

Some of the most commonly used ligands are:
(1) H2O (water)
(2) NH3 (ammonia)
(3) Cl- (chloride ion)
(4) CN- (cyanide ion)
Water is very abundant and are able to coordinate with various metal ions. Ammonia and Chloride ions are able to donate a lone pair of electrons. Cyanide ions have strong coordinating abilities.
