Amine vs Ammine

Postby Gabrielle Arreglo 3F » Fri Dec 08, 2023 10:31 pm

I know that sometimes when naming ligand compounds that have NH3 you use amine and other times you use ammine. Ex: Ethylenediamine vs Pentaamminechlorocobalt(III) chloride.

Amine is used for neutral ligands, while ammine is used for ammonia or its derivatives when they carry a positive charge within a coordination complex.

The use of amine refers to the functional group ammonia and ammine refers to a group of coordination compounds where it is a ligand, therefore it is used in naming.
