Alternate ways of writing [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl

Postby Callista OConnor » Sat Dec 09, 2023 3:18 pm

When writing a coordination compound that includes atoms not inside of the coordination sphere, for example [Co(NH3)5Cl]Cl H2O, where one Cl and the H2O are outside of the sphere:

Is there a difference between this format and if the Cl was written before the contents of the coordination sphere? As in Cl[Co(NH3)5Cl] H2O? Would that be a different shape or a different name?

Usually in compound notation the cation comes before the anion, which is then followed by the hydrate (if present). In this case, [Co(NH3)5CL]Cl would be the only correct way to write it, because the implication of putting the Cl first is that it is a cation.
