Naming

Postby Joanna_Sung_3F » Sat Dec 09, 2023 7:20 pm

When naming the ligands, I understand that you have to put a greek prefix in front of them which tells you how many ligands there are. However, if there are multiple ligands, would I be putting a greek prefix for each of them before each ligand name, or would the prefix be the TOTAL amount of ligands irrespective of which type of ligand it is?

When naming coordination compounds, Greek prefixes are applied to each type of ligand individually, indicating the number of that specific ligand in the complex. For instance, in [Co(NH₃)₄Cl₂], the name is tetraammine dichloridocobalt(III), where "tetraammine" denotes the presence of four ammonia ligands, and "dichlorido" signifies the existence of two chloride ligands. It's important to use the appropriate Greek prefix for each ligand to accurately convey the composition of the coordination complex.
