textbook problem 9C.1 c)
Why would we say cyano instead of cyanido? Are they equivalent, and if so, is there a preference for one or the other?

Cyano and cyanido can be used interchangeably. Cyanido is the just the new IUPAC Name Convention

They are equivalent, but in class we have been using the o way not the ido way. So we have been doing cyano, hydroxo, oxo, etc
