Naming Practice

Postby 206031320 » Sat Dec 09, 2023 8:45 pm

Hi, can anyone tell me what the correct names of [Cr(NH3)3(OH2)3]3+ and Na2[PtCl2(ox)2] are? Also, can anyone remind me when you can tell whether -ate is used or not?

Hi!

The correct name for Na2[PtCl2(ox)2] is sodium dichloridobis(oxalato) Platinate(roman number 4) and the correct name for [Cr(NH3)3(OH2)3]3+ is triamminetriaquachromium(iii). -ato is used when a ligand with a prefix of -ate is used and the charge of the ligand is negative.
