Naming

Postby Mariyam Oladele 1E » Sat Dec 09, 2023 9:43 pm

How do I know which order to put the names in when naming a coordination compound?

Start with the ligands in alphabetical order. Before each ligand name, add the greek prefix that corresponds to the number of ligands. Then tack on the metal at the end.

For cations, start by naming the ligands in alphabetical order with their corresponding greek prefixes. Then add the transition metal with it's oxidation number. For anions, you start with the cation portion and then the ligands in alphabetical order. You then name the transition metal with is corresponding name with the oxidation number. For anion complexes, the transition metals are worded differently. For example, Cu would be cuprate.
