Dentate basically means how many bonds can the ligand make. For example monodentate ligands can only bond once with the transition metal ion and bidentate can bind twice. The amount of bonds made depends on the shape of the molecule.

Oxalate is a bidentate ligand meaning that it can form two bonds.
