writing formula for ligands given name

Postby juliaddc » Sun Dec 10, 2023 11:36 pm

When writing formulas for coordination complexes in which there are multiple ligands, do we have to put all of them in a parenthesis within the square bracket?
For example, in triamminetriaquachromium(III)chloride would I put both (NH3)3 and (OH2)3 this way?

I've seen other examples where the second ligand is just written with no parenthesis.

Thank you!

Yes, if the atom has multiple ligands then they should be in brackets.

This is usually done because the ligands used are polyatomic ions, meaning that if you were to leave out the parentheses, you would change the formula for that ion, and your formula would no longer be correct. On the other hand, if you have ligands like Cl, you do not need to put them in parentheses because they are not polyatomic ions, and whatever subscript is assigned to them will still accurately reflect the formula name. Hope that helps!
