Equilibrium

Postby Tanner Baroni 3I » Wed Nov 09, 2016 2:28 pm

If the K value is between 10^-3 and 10^3, neither the reactants or products are strongly favored. So what does the K value mean if it is in between these values?

you just answered your own question lol
if k is in between those values, then neither the reactants or the products are favored. if it is less, then reactants are favored, and if it is greater, then the products are favored

wait I thought that if the value for K is greater than one then the product is favored? and if the value is less than one then the reactant is favored?

If the value of K is greater the product is favored and if its is smaller the reactant. This makes sense because K is calculated with products in the numerator and the reactants in the denominator. So if K is greater that means the numerator is bigger, which signifies a favor in the products.

Actually, if k is between those values, it is still considered product favored (between 0 and 10^3) or reactant favored (between 0 and 10^-3). It's just that if k is larger than 10^3 or smaller than 10^-3 it can be considered STRONGLY product or reactant favored, respectively.

If K is between those two values, unless it is at 0, one of the sides of the reaction is still favored. The only thing is though that the favoring is so minuscule that it isn't noticeable.

What is the difference between partial pressure and concentration?
