Both the prefixes bis-, tris-, etc. and the prefixes di-, tri-, etc are used to describe how many times a certain single ligand attaches to a central metal — and this usage is no different here than in typical molecule nomenclature. The ‘standard’ form one would use is di-, tri- instead of bis or tris

Use bis, tris, tetrakis, etc. when the ligand itself already has di, tri, etc in it.

E.g., (en)2 --> bis(ethylenediamine)

So when there isn't a di, tri, etc, you don't need to use bis?
