Ordering ligands within a complex (not naming!)

Postby Ryan Cerny 3I » Tue Nov 15, 2016 9:28 am

For actually writing the formula with brackets (not giving the long name) what would be the order? WHAT IS THE RULE FOR ORDERING THE LIGANDS?
- Are the ligands placed in alphabetical order ACCORDING TO THEIR NAME (even though we're writing the symbols)?
For example, for Diamminetetrahydroxochromate(II) ion would it be written as [Cr(NH3)2(OH)4] because ammine comes before hydroxo in the alphabet?

Also how would polydentates like C2O4^2- (often written as ox) affect this?
